Delicious pizza toppings

One of my indulgences in life is pizza. And there is nothing better that trying your own combination of toppings, whether its putting a twist on old classic combinations, or trying something completely different. There are also interesting healthy options worth exploring that won’t tilt the guilt-o-meter too much.

Remember, pizza is always best baked in the oven on a pizza stone, or of course in your wood fired diy pizza oven.

Note: If you don’t have a pizza stone, purchase one here.

You can also build a wood fired pizza oven for next time, see my DIY project ‘How to build a pizza oven’.

Lets get stuck in.

1. Margarita Twist (v)

  • This classic starts out with a tomato sauce on the pizza base.
  • Added to that is fresh tomato slices with basil and mozzarella cheese.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

My twist: Add some finely chopped chili and a balsamic vinegar reduction.

Optional: Add some black olives.

2. Bacon and Banana

This is a combination that works really well.

  • Coat the pizza base with tomato sauce.
  • Add mozzarella cheese.
  • Add strips or bits of fried bacon and slices of banana.

My twist: After baking, drizzle a little golden syrup over the pizza.

Optional: Sprinkle a bit of finely chopped chili for those who thrive on endorphins.

3. Bombay Curry

This combination you either love or hate. I love it and the rest of the family hates it. To me a must at least once a month.

  • Coat the pizza base with tomato sauce.
  • Add some left over curry. It can be chicken, lamb or beef curry, as long as its curry.
  • Add slices of banana and mozzarella cheese.

My twist: According to my wife, this whole pizza is twisted, but add some chopped tomato, onion and cilantro (coriander).

Optional: Add some chutney for extra sweetness, its a good combination with the tomato.

4. Butternut and arugula (rocket) (v)

My favorite vegetarian option. Best on a thin, crisp pizza base.

  • Coat the pizza base with mozzarella cheese and chopped garlic.
  • Add roasted butternut, feta cheese, caramelized onion.
  • After baking, add arugula to the pizza.

Optional: Add pecan nuts as a topping for some crunch.

5. Balsamic Beef

This is for the true carnivore.

  • Coat the pizza base with mozzarella cheese.
  • Grill a piece of beef steak, just seal it on the outside, I prefer it very rare.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes, then cut it into strips.
  • Reduce some balsamic vinegar in a pan, so it becomes a sticky sauce.
  • After baking the pizza, add the beef strips and arugula to the pizza.
  • Drizzle the balsamic reduction over the pizza.

6. Pepper Steak

I think pepper steak works on anything, even pizza.

  • Coat the pizza base with mozzarella cheese.
  • Grill a piece of beef steak, just seal it on the outside, I prefer it very rare.
  • Let it rest for 10 minutes, then cut it into strips.
  • After baking the pizza, add the beef strips and arugula to the pizza.
  • Drizzle pepper sauce over the pizza. See my pepper sauce recipe here.

7. Breakfast Pizza

This is great on a leisurely weekend morning, with coffee brewing in the background.

  • Coat the pizza base with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  • Add strips of fried bacon and cherry tomatoes.
  • Sprinkle fresh chopped oregano (or dried oregano) over the pizza.
  • After baking add a fried egg.

Optional: Add chopped chili and HB sauce to the pizza.

8. Desert Pizza

The pizza with a difference, from top to bottom.

First off, a base with a difference. I use a square flaky pastry base, see my flaky pastry recipe.

  • Bake the base to get it crisp.
  • Coat the base with a drizzle of syrup and blobs of blue berry jam.
  • Add freshly cut mixed berries, cherries strawberries to the base.
  • Sprinkle a layer of chocolate over the pizza.
  • Put the pizza back in the oven to melt the chocolate.
  • Add whipped fresh cream to the pizza.
  • Sprinkle chopped pecan nuts, chocolate and syrup over the top.
  • Cut into squares and serve with a side scoop of ice cream.
